West Michigan Cancer Center, in collaboration with Borgess Medical Center and Bronson Methodist Hospital, has been granted a three-year/full accreditation designation by the National Accreditation Program for Breast

Centers (NAPBC). NAPBC is a program administered by the American College
of Surgeons. Accreditation by the NAPBC is only given to those centers that
have voluntarily committed to provide the highest level of quality breast care and

Our Deepest Sympathy – Hon. Richard H. Timmers

We were deeply saddened to learn that The Honorable Richard H. Timmers, aged 72, passed away unexpectedly on Thursday, May 3, 2012. He was preceded in death by his parents, Sylvester and Blanche Timmers, and his brother Bill Timmers. Surviving are his wife of 30 years Leora, sons David (Carol) Grant, The Honorable Steven (Jennifer) Timmers, David (Wanda) Timmers, daughter Susan (Jason) Wood, grandchildren, Alexandra Timmers, Heather Grant, Adam Timmers, Brandon Skeel, Grace Timmers, Henry Wood, great-grandchildren Jaxson and David, brothers Joseph Timmers, Tom (Ginny) Timmers, sister Carol (Pat) Pflieger and many nieces, nephews, and friends.

Richard spent 13 years working as an attorney throughout the area, and served 22 years as a Kent County Court District Judge. He enjoyed traveling, fishing, golf, and spending time with family and friends when we weren’t driving him crazy! He will be remembered for his generosity, and his kind, thoughtful, and witty personality.

A memorial service will be held at 4 p.m. on Wednesday, May 9, 2012 at Reyers North Valley Chapel (2815 Fuller Ave Ne, Grand Rapids, MI 49505). Visitation from 3-4 p.m. Please consider a memorial contribution to Newaygo County Community Services, 6308 S Warner Ave, Fremont, Michigan, 49412

Borgess-Lee Memorial Hospital Honors Nurses During National Nurses Week, May 6-12

Borgess-Lee Memorial Hospital will celebrate and honor its nurses during National Nurses Week, May 6-12.

“Florence [Nightingale] understood the value of nursing, from compassion and caring to the science and critical-thinking components,” said Katie Brick, chief nursing officer, Borgess-Lee Memorial Hospital. “Nurses at Borgess-Lee give high-quality patient care through both compassion and exceptional outcomes. On behalf of our organization, I wish to thank our nurses for their dedication and talents.”

Every year, National Nurses Week focuses attention on the diverse ways America’s 3.1 million registered nurses work to save lives and improve the health of countless individuals. National Nurses Week begins on May 6, marked as National Nurses Day, and ends on May 12, the birthday of Florence Nightingale, founder of nursing as a modern profession. The American Nurses Association, through its 54 constituent member associations, advances the profession by fostering high standards of nursing practice, promoting economic and general welfare, advocating for a positive and realistic view of nursing, and lobbying Congress and the regulatory agencies on health care issues affecting nurses and the public.

Bob Schuur Retires From Borgess-Lee Memorial Hospital After 55 Years Of Service

After 55 years of dedicated service to Borgess-Lee Memorial Hospital, Bob Schuur has retired.

“Few people today can say they’ve worked at the same place for over five decades,” said Joy Strand, administrator and chief operating officer, Borgess-Lee Memorial Hospital. “Bob will be greatly missed. He always went the extra mile, whether it was delivering a precise image to aid a radiologist in making an important diagnosis for a patient, or simply offering someone a much-needed smile or laugh. It has been a true honor knowing and working with him, and we wish him much happiness in his retirement.”

Schuur served as a radiology technologist (RT) at Borgess-Lee, taking routine x-rays and computerized tomography (CT) scans. He also supervised RT students at the hospital during his tenure. Besides passing his boards and achieving his registry, Schuur’s most-memorable moment at Borgess-Lee was celebrating his fiftieth anniversary at a special ceremony with his mother at his side.

In retirement, he plans to travel and finish up his “man cave,” which will house his extensive M&M’s collection.

“It’s been a privilege working at Borgess-Lee with so many wonderful, caring people,” Schuur said. “I consider you all my second family. It has been a blast, and the 55 years have gone by so quickly.”

Campbell will be responsible for developing and implementing an integrated model of clinical programs that control medical costs, create clinical efficiencies and improve patient health in support of the hospital’s short and long-term strategic goals.  In collaboration with others on the leadership team, she will be integral in developing and implementing the organizational strategic plan.  Campbell will work closely with quality and information technology departments to identify gaps and opportunities for organizational performance improvement. Sunday May 20th – Celebrate ‘Better Hearing and Speech Month’

Psi Iota Xi, a national charitable organization, is dedicated to helping others, especially those with speech and hearing disabilities. The local chapter has been contributing to the greater Kalamazoo area for 40 years. The month of May is “Better Hearing and Speech Month. The “Walk for Better Hearing” is their annual springtime event that raises awareness regarding hearing loss and protection and additionally raises funds to support healthy hearing. Proceeds from the event go towards low income adults and children who need hearing care but who cannot afford it. Rodney D. Martin Receives President’s Award from Grand Rapids Bar Association

Rodney D. Martin, the Diversity Partner with the law firm of Warner Norcross & Judd LLP, has received the prestigious President’s Award from the Grand Rapids Bar Association, or GRBA.  

The President’s Award is given annually and recognizes special contributions by a GRBA member in service to the board of trustees, executive committee and executive director.  Martin was recognized for his contributions to increasing diversity and inclusion within the Bar, particularly for his role in the creation of the five-year action plan for the Managing Partners’ Diversity Collaborative.  He accepted the award during the GRBA’s Law Day luncheon on May 3.

Martin has been a critical member of the GRBA Diversity and Inclusion Committee, which was responsible for planning the well-received “Diversity Roundtable 2010: Retention of Diverse Attorneys” program that included two national keynote speakers.  Not only did Martin help select the speakers, he also facilitated the roundtable discussion. Allegan General Hospital Introducing Better Breathers Club

Allegan General Hospital (AGH) is starting a Better Breathers Club in connection with the American Lung Association.  The Better Breathers Club provides the opportunity for individuals with COPD or other chronic lung diseases to learn how to better cope with the disease and receive support from others who share in the same struggles.

Participants will learn from healthcare professionals how to manage their condition, take part in discussions, practice new skills and tips to live life to the fullest. The Better Breathers Club features educational presentations each month on a wide range of relevant topics.

The club is a free support group that meets on the hospital campus in the Jenner Building (545 Jenner Drive, Allegan) the third Wednesday of every month at 1 p.m.  The first meeting will be held on Wednesday, May 16.  Upcoming topics include laughing matters, breathing techniques, oxygen therapy and medications.  To learn more about AGH’s Better Breathers Club or to RSVP, please call 269-686-4386.
